Hello & Welcome I'm

Karina Aybar

I'm very passionate and committed to raising consciousness and taking concrete actions around women’s rights issues, gender equity, and violence against women.

Hello & Welcome, I'm

Karina Aybar

Thank you for being here. I am a Women's Empowerment bilingual (English & Spanish) psychotherapist and leadership coach. For over 14 years, I have helped women overcome anxiety, fear, low self-esteem, depression, co-dependency, and toxic relationships. I am here to help you learn how to cope with personal, relationships, and career challenges in a caring, confidential, and empowering space. I use a humanistic and holistic approach to therapy to help you understand your thoughts and feelings, gain self-confidence, and reach self-empowerment. Additionally, I use my professional coaching skills to help you move from

self-empowered to self-actualized.

I'm very passionate and committed to raising consciousness and taking concrete actions around women’s rights issues, gender equity, and helping eradicate violence against women.

My Story

From a very young age, I experienced gender inequities and sexual harassment firsthand. I faced a lot of challenges for being outspoken about my rights and those of other women that I witnessed being oppressed, abused, and abiding by societal standards that promote limiting beliefs and toxic roles about what it means to be a "true" woman.

I used to struggle with setting boundaries too, especially with family and intimate relationships.  I am a former compulsive caretaker and people-pleaser. AND, while I still want to be of service to others, after intentionally working on the root causes of my lack of boundaries and unhealthy tendencies for years, I was able to understand that self-care, empowered vulnerability & boundaries are the foundation for balanced and healthy relationships.

I no longer feel depleted and I have genuine and trustworthy relationships. I am now so happy to share many of the tools that helped me and that I use and teach my clients.

I knew that I was going to be in the helping profession as early as my pre-teen years. I wanted to be an ambassador for change in promoting equitable and just communities in general, and especially being a women's empowerment change maker.

How I Built Resilience During A Life-Threatening Time:

In 2021, I was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). TNBC is most prevalent in African American & Latina women but it doesn't discriminate against all women & men. It is the deadliest type of breast cancer and it's not receptive to hormones, making it more difficult to treat.

During this life-threatening and vulnerable time, I really had to practice what I preach: building resilience through vulnerability.

I have asked for and accepted help from others, and I have been sharing my experiences openly. As many of my clients can relate, if you have been parentified or have adopted the role of caretaker in your relationships, accepting help could be quite the challenge. However, it is in this process that we can foster genuine and long-lasting relationships.

This process could be quite traumatic, and many experts agree that emotional connection is crucial to healing. The best predictor of the impact of any trauma is not the severity of the event, but whether we can seek and take comfort from others who care.

I believe that a major factor that contributed to my cancer diagnosis was stress, and my inability to honor my body's boundaries at the time.

I have expanded my mission to create awareness in hopes that other women and men become proactive about their breasts’ health, as well as learn to set healthy boundaries with themselves, and in relationships.

My Credentials:

I hold 2 degrees; a Master's Degree in Social Work from the Silverman School of Social Work at Hunter College. Concentration: Organizational Leadership & Management & Clinical Work, and my Bachelor's Degree in Women's Studies & Sociology at The City University of New York - Hunter College.

I'm Certified as a Professional Coach: Leadership, Career & Life Coaching Specialty by the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC) and accredited by the International Coach Federation.

I've served as Managing Director for Citywide Community Services at the New York City Commission on Human Rights, educating the public about the City Human Rights Law, which protects New Yorkers from discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations.

Additionally, I served as the Program Director for Nuevo Amanecer, an award-winning anti-domestic violence program coordinated by the Dominican Women’s Development Center. I've worked with the Center for over a decade, serving as a counselor, program supervisor, and director, and currently serve as a proud board member.

Steering Committee Member-Brides' March against Domestic Violence

Since 2005, Karina has been an active co-organizer of the Brides March Against Domestic Violence every September 26, an annual event that was started in New York City in 2001 to remember Gladys Ricart, a Dominican woman from Washington Heights, who was murdered on September 26, 1999, by her abusive former boyfriend on the day she was to wed her fiancé. The mission of the Brides' March is to raise awareness of domestic violence and its consequences. To date, thousands of women, men, and youth, among them members of the Ricart family and other families affected by domestic violence, along with elected officials, and scores of domestic violence advocates and survivors, gather every September 26, rain or shine, to memorialize Gladys and the many other victims who have also lost their lives to domestic violence.
